What makes a good gun sound?
Hello! I'm leaving this post because I am really curious about the perspectives of both industry professionals and users regarding gun sounds in games.
When looking at major shooter games like Call of Duty or Battlefield recently, I have noticed that even though the development team puts in a lot of effort by faithfully doing field recordings of real firearms and even winning awards for their sound, there are still quite a few harsh criticisms in the user community, such as "it is worse than the previous game" or "the gun sounds are light and cheap."
I am curious about what causes this gap in perception from a sound design perspective or based on actual shooting experiences. What would a "good gun sound" that truly satisfies users actually be?
I work in game sound design, but I lack a lot of experience designing games related to firearms. Also, since firearms are illegal in Korea, I have served in the military, but I've only ever experienced the single-issue firearm supplied to me and haven't had the chance to try various guns. While playing this Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, I thought the sound was really great and felt that the sound differences between guns were meaningful, but I am also wondering if this stems from my lack of experience.
I'll also attach the YouTube video link where I saw those negative feedbacks.
