AT 4050 for Microphone Monday
The Audio-Technica AT 4050 is one of the more flexible, neutral sounding large diaphragm condensers. While there is some hype between 6k–15k Hz, depending on the polar pattern selection, I generally find this mic to sound true to the sound source. I love how consistent the figure-8 pattern is across the frequency spectrum, making it a great choice for dead siding. Of all the orchestral instruments that get lost in the main array, harp can very quickly disappear. But the 4050 in figure-8 as spot mic pointed at the sound board and ceiling, and dead siding the brass that likely plays immediately behind the harp, does wonders helping me represent the harp in the mix. I also like to pair it with an AT 4033 for mid-side recording.
